+Can I fly an aerial drone?

The use of drones adversely affects the ecology of rare wildlife such as the native Raicho (ptarmigans), causing excessive stress and damage due to falling. They also irritate other visitors, and may cause trouble with landowners and facility managers. Furthermore, drone flight is restricted according to aviation law, whereby flight may be completely prohibited or the permission of the landowner or facility manager required. If you want to fly a drone, please contact the park management office in advance. Be aware that only Japanese is spoken.

ドローンを使用してもいいですか。

ドローンの使用は、ライチョウなど希少な野生生物の生態に影響（過剰なストレスや落下による破損など）を及ぼすことや、他の国立公園利用者や土地・施設の所有者・管理者とのトラブルにつながることが懸念されます。
またドローンの飛行には、航空法等による制限があるほか、土地・施設の所有者や管理者の許可を得る必要があり、場所によってはドローンの飛行を禁止しています。ドローンを飛行させる場合は、事前に所管の国立公園管理事務所・管理官事務所までお問い合わせ願います。ただし、日本語のみの対応となります。

+Are there trails that can easily be walked on a day trip?

The park contains a variety of walking and hiking trails that can be easily enjoyed on a day trip. Some of the main trails are introduced below:

  • Kamikochi: There are hiking trails to Mt. Yakedake, Dakesawa, the Tokugo Pass, and Mt. Nishi-Hotaka. We recommend hiking the Mt. Nishi-Hotaka course as far as Mt. Maruyama, rather than the summit. If you are confident scrambling over rocks you can also continue as far as Doppyo. There are also a number of walking trails within Kamikochi. See this map for details.
  • Hirayu Onsen: There are walking courses around Hirayu Onsen in addition to hiking trails into the Northern Alps. Please visit the following websites for further information:
  • Mt. Norikura / Norikura Kogen: At Mt. Norikura, you can complete a day trip hike from Tatamidaira to Kengamine, the mountain’s highest peak. The Norikura highlands are home to a variety of hikes around waterfalls and grassy meadows.

+How can I get to Kamikochi in winter?

The prefectural road to Kamikochi is closed during winter, so access is only possible on foot. After taking a bus or taxi to the Nakanoyu bus-stop, it takes about 2 hours on foot to reach the Kappa Bridge from the entrance of the Kama Tunnel. Winter mountain equipment is required and if you are unsure about making the hike in, then we recommend enlisting the services of a professional guide.

+Am I likely to encounter wild animals?

The Chubusangaku National Park is home to variety of animals including bears, monkeys, and wild birds.
Japanese macaque monkeys are relatively common. They live in groups in the forest and can often be seen roaming together through the trees, and along paths, with little fear of humans. You may see Kamoshika (Japanese serows) in the forest, or if you are really lucky, an Okojo (Japanese stoat).
Never feed these wild animals. Feeding by humans can alter their behavior and have adverse effects on the ecosystem.
The Chubusangaku National Park is also a natural habitat for bears. When walking on the paths and mountain trails, please take measures to avoid a surprise encounter. Playing music from a radio or attaching a small bell to your pack helps to announce the presence of humans. It is also recommended that people walk in groups in areas where bears have been sighted. If you see a bear, please move away slowly so as not to aggravate it.

A large diversity of plant life can be observed within the Chubusangaku National Park, including some rare alpine species.
This vegetation is protected, so please do not damage or trample the plants by straying from the path. It is strictly forbidden to remove flowers or seeds from the park.

+Is there a place where I can charge my smartphone or camera?

There are no facilities offering charging services within the southern region of the Chubusangaku National Park. Please ensure that your devices are fully charged before entering the park.

The Gift Norikura store in the Norikura Tourist Center allows customers to charge batteries. Many accommodations also allow guests to charge their devices. In some cases, charging may not be possible at mountain huts, while other huts provide charging services for a small fee (varies according to location). There is a risk of equipment failure due to unstable power supplies from on-site power generation (mountain huts are unable to accept responsibility for any damage caused).

コインロッカーはありませんが、上高地観光センターに手荷物の一時預かり所があります。開山期間中の6：00～17：00の営業となります。
〇奥飛騨温泉郷
平湯バスターミナル、新穂高ロープウェイ、アルプス街道平湯構内にコインロッカーがあります。
＊新穂高ロープウェイは、営業時間内のみ利用可能です。ロッカーに入らない場合は、荷物預かりもします。(有料)

In the case of sudden injury or illness, please call 119 or contact a nearby hotel or restaurant. The closest hospitals are a 45- to 90-minute drive away (in Takayama City, Hida City and Matsumoto City).

+Are there places where I can smoke?

Please use the smoking areas and ashtrays provided in the vicinity of each bus terminal. In other areas, please stand and smoke in an area that is free from other visitors. Please dispose of your butts in the ashtrays provided, or take them home with you.

  • Kamikochi: In Kamikochi there is only a single designated smoking area with an ashtray installed near the bus terminal. If you wish to smoke elsewhere, please use a portable ashtray and stand apart from other visitors.
  • Sawando: There is a smoking area in the Glen Park Sawando parking lot.
  • Okuhida Onsengo Hot Springs: Smoking areas are available at Hirayu Bus Terminal, Shinhotaka Ropeway and Shinhotaka Center.
  • Hirayu Onsen Tourist Information Center: There is a smoking area at the Hirayu Bus Terminal.

A number of guide organizations offer English language guidance. Please contact each organization directly to enquire about enlisting a guide on your preferred date and route, and to make an advance reservation.

  • Kamikochi: Reservations are required in advance. Please contact the Multilingual Mountain Guides of Nagano Prefecture (MulMoGON, ) or apply through the experience booking site ‘Voyagin.’

+Can I fly an aerial drone?

The use of drones adversely affects the ecology of rare wildlife such as the native Raicho (ptarmigans), causing excessive stress and damage due to falling. They also irritate other visitors, and may cause trouble with landowners and facility managers. Furthermore, drone flight is restricted according to aviation law, whereby flight may be completely prohibited or the permission of the landowner or facility manager required. If you want to fly a drone, please contact the park management office in advance. Be aware that only Japanese is spoken.

ドローンの使用は、ライチョウなど希少な野生生物の生態に影響（過剰なストレスや落下による破損など）を及ぼすことや、他の国立公園利用者や土地・施設の所有者・管理者とのトラブルにつながることが懸念されます。

There are no convenience stores within the southern region of the Chubusangaku National Park. The nearest convenience stores are the 7-11 Hata-Akamatsu store near Shin-Shimashima Station on the Matsumoto City side, and the Lawson Takayama Nyukawacho store on the Takayama City side. Both stores are a 30- to 40-minute drive from the Sawando and Hirayu bus terminals.

There are very few ATMs and currency exchanges in the southern region of the Chubusangaku National Park. Please be sure to prepare an adequate amount of cash before your visit.

* We recommend bringing a number of ¥100 coins to pay for toilet facilities.
* Most of the mountain huts do not accept credit cards and there are no ATMs or currency exchange services within Kamikochi. Please plan accordingly.

The following day-trip hot spring facilities provide mixed-sex bathing:

  • Okuhida Onsengo Hot Springs: You can enjoy mixed bathing at Shinhotaka no Yu, Shinzanso, Yarimikan, and Okuhida Garden Hotel Yakedake.
  • Shirahone Onsen: Awanoyu Ryokan and Katsuranoyu Maruei Ryokan have mixed baths. Mixed bathing with a family or private group is available at facilities with private bathing areas.
  • Norikura: Facilities with private bathing times provide mixed bathing for families or private groups when reserved in advance.
  • * There are no day-trip hot spring facilities with mixed bathing in the Kamikochi area.

+Can you give me information on hot spring etiquette?

The hot spring waters that flow from the roots of the Japanese alps are one of nature’s blessings. We hope that you will enjoy this experience of the natural environment. As a general rule, most hot spring baths do not permit bathing in swimwear. Furthermore, accessories and jewelry may be discolored by the minerals in the spring water, so we recommend removing them before entering the water. When taking a bath please follow the general rules of bathing etiquette. These include showering before entering the bath, not soaking your hair or towel in the water, refraining from eating or drinking in the bath, and taking care to avoid splashing other customers with water from the showers or while in the bath.

During peak periods it is necessary to either make a reservation online, or receive a numbered ticket at the bus terminal, when travelling from Kamikochi to Shin-Shimashima, Matsumoto, Shirahone Onsen or Norikura Kogen (In addition to reserving a bus, travelers are also required to simultaneously purchase a boarding ticket.)
Please receive a numbered ticket with your boarding time from the ticket office at Kamikochi Bus Terminal. Visit Japan Bus Online for further information.

No. The final stop for Kamikochi bound buses is “Kamikochi Bus Terminal” which is two stops beyond “Taisho Pond”. It is easy to mistake “Taisho Pond” for the terminus because many customers choose to alight here, however it is not the final stop.
During peak season it is often difficult to board return buses at mid-route stops such as “Taisho Pond”. For this reason, we recommend that customers wishing to visit “Taisho Pond” disembark there on the outbound journey.

There are flat-rate taxis running to Kamikochi from Sawando or Hirayu. Vehicles can be dispatched from the Sawando Joint Vehicle Dispatch Center. Because only a small number of taxis are dispatched for destinations other than Kamikochi, and business hours are short, reservations are required in advance. Flat rate taxi fares (one way) for Kamikochi, are as follows (Correct as of 2020. Fares are subject to change, so please be sure to check in advance).

  • Sawando - Taisho Pond: 3,900 yen
  • Sawando - Kamikochi Bus Terminal: 4,600 yen
  • Hirayu Onsen - Taisho Pond: 4,000 yen
  • Hirayu Onsen - Kamikochi Bus Terminal: 4,000 yen

In areas such as Kamikochi and Mt. Norikura access by private vehicles is strictly regulated for reasons of environmental protection. +How can I get to Kamikochi in winter?

The prefectural road to Kamikochi is closed during winter, so access is only possible on foot. After taking a bus or taxi to the Nakanoyu bus-stop, it takes about 2 hours on foot to reach the Kappa Bridge from the entrance of the Kama Tunnel. Winter mountain equipment is required and if you are unsure about making the hike in, then we recommend enlisting the services of a professional guide.

+What is a mountain climbing plan? How should I submit it?

A mountain climbing plan is used to notify the local police of your planned route before heading into the mountains. Having climbers carefully consider their plan in advance promotes safer climbing. Furthermore, please be sure to submit your plan as it will aid in a prompt rescue in the unlikely event of an accident.
Please submit your plan at the dedicated post boxes provided at trail-heads or directly to the police station with jurisdiction over your chosen trail-head.

“Compass” is a convenient internet climbing plan creation and submission website provided by the Japan Mountain Guide Association. Please also give copies of your climbing plan to your family and friends.

登山届とは、登山の計画を事前に警察等へ届け出るものです。登山者が自ら計画をたてることで安全な登山につながり、また万が一遭難した際の迅速な救助活動にもつながりますので、必ず提出するようお願いします。

出来るだけ朝早く出発し、山小屋には15時頃までに着くよう行動し、遅くとも16時までには到着してください。
予想外の時間超過となるリスクも考慮して登山計画を立ててください。長時間の登山を計画する場合、この山域では、日の出頃に出発するのが一般的です。午後は霧や雷の発生率が高くなり、気温も急激に下がります。夜間の行動は大変危険です。トラブル時の救助は日没後はできないため、一晩を山中にて過ごさなくてはならないなど、命に関わるリスクが高くなります。エマージェンシーシートやシェルター（ツエルト）など非常用の装備を携行することをおすすめします。万が一、山小屋への到着が17時を過ぎる可能性がある時は、山小屋に電話をしてください。

There are almost no facilities offering mountaineering equipment rentals within the southern region of the Chubusangaku National Park. Some mountain huts rent helmets for certain trails, but the quantity of rental equipment is limited, so please bring your own helmet when hiking routes where helmets are mandatory. Recommended clothing and equipment vary greatly depending on season and elevation. Even in summer, trails along high ridgelines see low temperatures in the morning and evening, so bring a fleece to protect from the cold. Sunglasses, goggles, crampons etc. are essential when snow covers the mountains. Please check in advance for information on the route you plan on hiking, and be sure to wear appropriate clothes and equipment.

+Is it possible to take a bath or shower, or to do laundry at a mountain hut?

The majority of mountain huts do not have bath or shower facilities. It is also not possible to wash shoes or clothing. Please prepare your equipment based on this situation. Some mountain huts near wetlands or hot springs have baths but do not allow the use of soap or shampoo in order to protect the surrounding environment. Water is a valuable resource at huts on the high ridges. Thank you for co-operating with water conservation and environmental protection measures.

+Is it possible to charge cameras and smartphones at mountain huts?

Charging facilities at mountain huts differ depending on each hut. In some cases, charging is not possible. In other cases, charging facilities may only be available to overnight guests, or a small fee may apply. Please follow the rules and only charge your devices from designated outlets.
Charging is conducted at your own risk. Mountain huts are not connected to the mains grid and the power supply may not be stable due to electricity being generated on-site. Devices may also be damaged due to the effects of lightning strikes. The mountain huts cannot accept responsibility for any damage incurred.

Mountain huts provide various kinds of accommodations from large rooms, to bunk beds. Many huts feature shared rooms, though an increasing number of huts have private rooms available. Please refrain from speaking loudly or making noise in the room. As a general rule for trekking in Japan, early departures and early arrivals are expected for safe mountaineering. Some guests may be tired and resting, while others may be sleeping early in preparation for an early departure the following day. Please remember to be considerate of other guests.
